I love the imagery of this quote attributed to Mark Twain, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” Some years ago, when I was struggling with forgiveness, I penned this poem. It wasn’t a quick, easy fix for that relationship, but years later, I can say it was worth doing.
When the world comes at me with thorns and prickly spines, when words are harsh and judgmental of mine, I have but one choice, no, but two. I can multiply bitterness or do what is true. I can spread anger and hurt like a weed in the green, twisting and creeping til my pride is supreme. These bad feelings and temper will choke out all that is good, keeping me from kindness and obeying as I should. God expects that I live and work without pride, with gentleness and kindness and no divisive sides. Peace and hope are to be in my talk. truth in love helps others in their walk. It is when I forgive as God in Christ forgave me that His fragrance stands high for others to see. When thorns rise and troubles I do meet, I know through His loving favor I can stand in complete Bloom, pleasing Him.
Blessings,
